The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Chryssostomos is located on the hill of Grota, 3 kilometers away from Naxos Town, offering a breathtaking panoramic view to the Aegean Sea and the neighboring Cyclades.
The monastery has been established in the early 13th century BC and is dedicated to Saint John, while it has been operating as a female abbey ever since. It is a fortified building that exhibits the characteristics of the traditional Cycladic architecture, as well as has medieval attributes, such as scaldings that were used to confront pirate attacks. The monastery was restored during the 18th century by Andronikos Pradounas, while the interior of the monastery includes a chapel dedicated to Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas), where visitors can see various icons from the Byzantine era, with the infamous silver icon of Agios Ioannis that dates back to 1818 standing out.
