In a lovely location, between Mesi and Ano Potamia, is the traditional watermill of Giannis Drillis. As in the past, this watermill belonged to Stylianos Grillakis, it is also known as the Gryllakis Watermill. The surrounding region is a truly relaxing spot, with lush greenery and water streams. In fact, this stone watermill was constructed on the banks of the river and is estimated about 250-300 years old.
In the past, the women of Potamia and other close rivers would come to this place to wash their clothes and take the ground flour from the mill. Such mills are found very frequently around the island, as water was abundant in Naxos, in contrast to other Cyclades islands which usually lacked water. The miller used to also reside in the mill. Today this watermill has been restored by its owner, Mr. Giannis Drillis, who also organizes guides and explains exactly how mills would work.
